Quejas comunes:

I purchased a timeshare and they offer to buy a time share we already had and were so astute in describing the deal, I eat it all up. After five months of trying to get a hold of them through e-mails and phone calls that have gone unanswered, I have given up on the money, the vacation, everything. I still get mad at times (at me mostly). When I first came aware of what was happening I did not want to believe it;after it settled in, I went from deeply depressed and mad, to feeling embarrassed and powerless.

My husband took me to Cancun,Mexico for the first time and we were greeted by a couple people who were suppose to take us to our taxi but it took a long time since they wanted to give us free things such as a Tulum Express and Chichinitza passes, there is alot of lies in this time share we thought it was all good but it turns out that is not the case. I can not use any of my points until 2013 but yet my first payments was January 2011. I need to get my money back if all possible.

After a long flight from Vancouver BC, my boyfriend and I finally arrived in Cancun.  As we were ready to exit, I approached a man named Carlos to ask him where the Best Day shuttle was.  He looked like an official airport official and so he directed me to where they would be and then asked what my plans in Cancun were.  We told him and he then offered us a day pass to "a new hotel resort", at a cost of 20 dollars per person, which included 2 buffets and a 1 hour massage by the beach, plus a day to check out this new resort.  I declined and so he offered us the same deal for the day for only 10 dollars per person.  I then accepted the offer.  He offered us round trip transport, 2 buffets, and a one hour massage for each of us for 10 dollars each.  I asked him "Whats the catch."  Carlos replied - no catch, just come and see our resort, enjoy it and please tell your family and friends about us.  He then asked me to bring my credit card so "he can get paid," once I show it to them with my name on it.  Then he asked my boyfriend and I to bring something that shows we live at the same address.  He promised to pick us up the next day at 9am.  We got picked up the next day and taken to the El Cid resort in Cancun.  We were asked a few marketing questions and given each a Mayan souvenir for free.  Once we sat to our buffet breakfast, a young girl named Christina sat with us and started asking us about where weve travelled and where we would like to travel in the future.  We spoke of this and she then started to talk about the El Cid vacation club.  I said to her - "Is this a timeshare presentation?"  She said - its not a timeshare, its a vacation club.  She asked the both of us to keep an open mind about this 90 minute presentation.  She asked us if we knew we were coming to a presentation, and we both said no.  She asked us to be a part of this presentation and she stated there is no intention to push people into buying anything.  We then agreed to the presentation as we felt obligated into listening to the presentation.  After all, we would be getting a massage and a free lunch anyway.  The presentation was all about the history of the resort, its locations, vacation and holiday stats, the ups and downs of a vacation club, and layouts of the resort rooms.  She also explained the points system of El Cid and its affiliations with other companies such as Wyndham.  We looked at some real suites, and toured the resort.  It was all beautiful and serene.  They offer butler service as well as other services in the resort such as the spa, romantic dinner and wedding services etc......She also mentioned the best snorkelling reef is here at El Cid Cancun.
During the tour I asked Christina - "How much am I going to have to put down?"  She laughed and dodged my question and said we will discuss this at the end.  Once we got back into the office, she kept offering us drinks, including beer, for free.  She then showed me what I had to put down as payment - $85 000 USD, which she stated, I can pay in monthly installments for 2-5 years.  Plus, she offered me 400 000 bonus points which I need to earn and use for El Cid resorts, cruises, car rentals etc......  I would have to buy points PLUS pay the 85 grand for this vacation club.  The maintenance fee was about 1500 a year, plus some other admin fees.  As this was being explained to us, I suddenly heard a male staff yell somthing in Spanish and everyone cheered in delight.  I asked Christina what that was about, and she said "It means we made another sale."  We said no to the vacation club membership, and explained we were not intending on spending this kind of money on this holiday.  Christina then said "But for the places you travel to, you will be spending more on trips over the years than 85 000.  I told her that Im not even sure if I will be travelling in the future, and I also told her that I would never sink my money into something that will decrease in value over the years.  She then proceeded to call me "negative" and said she was only trying to help me with getting more blue water and white sands in my life.  When I sat there and said no, she called her manager and then when I said no, they continued to get another staff member to convince me to change my mind, and each time I said no, even when they offered me bonuses and free weeks here and there.  At the end, the last sales lady who was supposed to convince couldnt.  She got fed up and said: "Vanita, well you know, nothing in life is free, and you should have known that this was a sales presentation."  I said to her - "Well can you at least give me this information so I can take it home and think about it?"  She said no, the offer is only being offered today and today only, and none of the information being said to me could be taken out of this room.  As I got up to leave, the staff got so rude with me they said "Look at the free things weve given to you, plus Carlos came to get you, and weve got families to feed as well, and so does he."  We are  proud to say, we left without making a huge financial mistake, we got our massage and meals and even a free ride back home!  Do not do not do not buy a timeshare.  Lots in Mexico go for as little as 65 000 by the beach, and its all yours, could be a potential real estate investment.  Do not buy a timeshare.  Once I got back to my hotel I looked up horrible reviews about El Cid timeshare resorts, plus other timeshare nightmare stories.  They will manipulate and exaggerate to get you to buy, they will imply beer on you to get you drunk so things look better when your tipsy, they will guilt you into buying by stating you got free gifts and free meals and a massage by stating they have families to support, and you are supposed to make a decision on the spot without taking the info home and thinking about it.  That is a lot of money to be thinking of giving to them on the spot.  Plus it doesnt give you a chance to not be able to google them up and read horrible reviews about them.  We are happy to be able to rent out cheap hotels without the headaches and hassles of a timeshare!  We only travel about once or twice a year and stay in moderately priced hotels, you cant compare that to sinking in 85 000 plus buying points on something you will hardly use!  Dont believe for a second that you can recuperate your money by renting your share out to others to make money.  It just doesnt work that well and easy, otherwise we would all be buying timeshares for this purpose.  The staff will promise you that you can rent it to others.  Just stay away from this all,  timeshare advertising is heavily promoted in Mexico.
